Fake BP Twitter Account Draws Followers With Oil-Spill Satire

A Twitter user with an account dubbed BPGlobalPR is posting satirical entries about the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico–and already has more than twice as many followers as BP America’s actual account.

The BPGlobalPR account includes tweets such as “Doing our best to turn oil into oilinade. So far the stuff tastes TERRIBLE.”

With posts such as “The good news: Mermaids are real. The bad news: They are now extinct. #bpcares,” the stream of tweets from the account is long on dark humor and subtle outrage at BP’s actions. It’s also peppered with responses to twitterers who did not know that the account was fake and were angered at the thought that an oil company would post content such as “If we had a dollar for every complaint about this oil spill, it wouldn’t compare to our current fortune. Oil is a lucrative industry!”

The increasing popularity of the account–and the fact that a few people apparently think it could be real–speaks volumes about the public’s view of the oil company as the disaster in the Gulf of Mexico worsens. BP is struggling to cap the leaking well, which has been spewing at least 5,000 barrels of oil a day since an explosion on the Deepwater Horizon rig April 20. Oil already has been coming ashore on Louisiana’s environmentally fragile coastline.

House Tax Panel Urged to Legalize Online Gambling

Supporters of legalizing Internet gambling told a House panel Wednesday that to do so would raise $42 billion for the federal government over the next 10 years.

Under companion bills from Rep. Barney Frank (D., Mass.) and Jim McDermott (D., Wash.), most of that revenue would come from income taxes collected on individuals’ winnings.

But Mr. McDermott’s bill would also impose an eight percent tax on online gambling deposits, paid by the operators of gaming websites.

“We are sending a multi-billion dollar industry offshore and underground. As a result, we are making tax criminals of Americans who can’t declare their online winnings to the IRS,” Mr. McDermott told the House Ways and Means Committee during a Wednesday hearing.

Germany Questions Google’s Data ”Mistake”

With its admission last week that its Street View cars unwittingly captured data sent over unsecured wireless WiFi neworks, Google (GOOG) appears to have run afoul of regulators on both sides of the Atlantic.

Sources familiar with the matter tell The Financial Times that the Federal Trade Commission is considering an inquiry into the matter, and the panel of European privacy regulators that advises the European Commission is calling for a full investigation to determine exactly what information was collected and whether the manner of its collection was a violation of privacy law.

The Europeans seem particularly miffed over the cock-up and Google’s explanation for it, which they find a bit suspect. Over the weekend Peter Schaar, Germany’s federal commissioner for data protection and freedom of information, fired off a caustic blog post questioning the credibility of the company’s claim that personal data was collected accidentally.

‘So everything was a simple oversight, a software error!” Schaar wrote. ‘‘The data was collected and stored against the will of the project’s managers and other managers at Google. If we follow this logic further, this means: The software was installed and used without being properly tested beforehand. Billions of bits of data were mistakenly collected, without anyone in Google noticing it, including Google’s own internal data protection managers, who two weeks ago were defending to us the company’s internal data protection practices.”

Have to admit, he does have a point. How does a company with Google’s smarts and technological acumen collect and store WiFi network payload data in more than 30 countries for three years without being aware of it?

Mistakes are made, I suppose. But the breadth of this one is pretty incredible. As Marc Rotenberg, Executive Director of the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC), told The Financial Times. “This may be one of the most massive surveillance incidents by a private corporation that has ever occurred,” he said. “It is unprecedented vacuuming of WiFi data by a private company. Can you imagine what would happen if a German corporation was sending cars through Washington sucking up all this information?”

Indian Premier League Cricket Scores Big on YouTube

The YouTube blog has released more figures on what’s turning out to be one of the biggest online sports experiences — the IPL-YouTube online channel.

YouTube’s IPL Channel got the highest ever online advertising spending in India across one event.

It got an astonishing 54 million video views. For comparison, NBC, which had exclusive rights to the Winter Olympics held earlier this year, reported 45 million video streams.

The channel went live in March when the first match of the Indian Premier League’s third season was flagged off with the game between the Deccan Chargers and Kolkata Knight Riders in Mumbai. From that first ball the YouTube community could watch each match of the multibillion-dollar cricket league live on the specially created IPL channel on YouTube. Replays and highlights were also part of the “subscription” experience.

Google initially predicted 10 million views but got five times that, according to the data released Thursday. The IPL channel, Google said, is the channel in India with the most subscribers. The National Program on Technology Enhanced Learning, an educational channel broadcast in partnership with the Indian Institutes of Technology and Indian Institute of Science, is a distant second.

The live stream numbers crossed four million in the final, the highest tally. Traffic from the U.S. has also exceeded Google’s expectations.

Given that similar sports broadcasting rights are hard to come by in the U.S., since most sports organizations, such as basketball’s NBA, and golf’s Masters, have sites of their own, this has been a one-of-a-kind chance for Google to reach a global audience.

Amit Bhartiya, business head of online audience measuring platform Vizisense, says “time spent” on the channel is now the key indicator for Google to watch.

“While this is a good beginning for sports, it’s not really a new phenomenon in India,” said Mr. Bhartiya. “Rajshri and other entertainment sites have been playing television shows and releasing movies both on their sites and on YouTube for a while now.”

Despite some tech glitches along the way the partnership and the numbers that have been released are breaking records on many counts. By roping in HSBC Bank as the lead sponsor, and Samsung, the Royal Challengers, Airtel, Brylcream and Hewlett-Packard as well across gold and silver categories (differentiated by match presence and ad formats), Google has got the biggest share ever of online advertising spending across one event in India.

The Economic Times pegged online lead sponsor rates between 50 to 80 million rupees ($1.1 million to $1.7 million) compared with television rates of around 200 million rupees. SportsProMedia estimated that HSBC spent around $750,000. Advertisers got exposure across the world through pre-roll ads prior to match highlights, in-stream ads during the live broadcast (with a five-minute delay) and wicket paste-ups.

2010 Could Be the Year of the Display Ad. Or the Cable TV Ad. Take Your Pick.

There are a whole lot of people–from scrappy start-ups to publishers to Google (GOOG)–betting that display advertising is finally going to start picking up on the Web.

So they’ll be heartened by this table, from a survey of ad buyers conducted by J.P. Morgan’s Imran Khan. It shows display ads picking up 1.5 percent of ad budgets this year (click to enlarge):

Note that comScore (SCOR) says display ad volume (but not overall revenue) jumped 15 percent last quarter, and it’s tempting to believe that this is finally the year when Web advertising really moves beyond search advertising.

Meanwhile, the people who are feeling most confident about their near-term future are the guys selling TV advertising. Broadcast TV is still losing share, but cable TV is up. And most buyers–74 percent–who do pay for spots say they’re spending more than last year.

According to sources close to the situation, AOL has hired Alex Gounares (pictured here) as its CTO.

Gounares’s departure was announced internally at Microsoft (MSFT) today, where he is corporate VP of Advertising Research and Development and CTO for the software giant’s Online Services division.

According to his bio at Microsoft, Gounares had previously been “corporate vice president for Corporate Strategy, where he was responsible for helping set the overall strategic direction for the company. Before that, Gounares spent three years as the technology assistant to Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates, and he also was responsible for helping formulate and drive the technical strategy for the company.”

Sources said he will be moving back east to take on the job at AOL (AOL). He will replace Ted Cahall, who left AOL in late January.

Sirius Posts a Profit

Sirius XM Radio’s latest quarter turned out to be a decent one for the satellite radio operator. Posting first-quarter earnings before market open today, the company reported a profit of $41.6 million, or one cent per share, compared with a year-earlier loss of $52.6 million, or seven cents a share. Revenue rose 13 percent to $663.8 million.

Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters had expected the company to break even on revenue of $671 million. Sirius added 171,441 net subscribers during the period and reiterated its view that it expects to add more than 500,000 subscribers this year.

With quarterly net subscriber additions of 171,441, Sirius (SIRI) ended March with 18,944,199 subscribers. Quite an improvement over the year-ago quarter, when it lost 404,422 subscribers.

“Continued positive subscriber growth, double-digit growth in revenue, and a sharp focus on costs resulted in the highest quarterly adjusted operating income in the company’s history,” Sirius CEO Mel Karmazin said in a statement. “The continuing recovery of the automotive sector and expanding signs of increased consumer spending are encouraging signs for the company’s growth prospects.”

Still more good news for the company, which last week avoided delisting from Nasdaq. That said, at $1.14, Sirius shares are trading down 7.32 percent this morning. Evidently, the revenue miss didn’t go over too well with investors.
